Car Camping in the Philippines: A Growing Trend for Nature Lovers

In the midst of the pandemic, Filipinos found a way to escape the confinements of their homes and reconnect with nature through a new form of travel: car camping. A Facebook page called Car Camping PH, which was created in December 2020 by Zernan Canonigo, has since grown to over 43,000 members, attracting die-hard outdoor enthusiasts, curious travelers, and new camping enthusiasts.

Car camping is a unique experience that offers a sense of freedom and flexibility. It involves driving to a remote location, setting up camp, and enjoying the great outdoors without the need for expensive equipment or training. Unlike traditional camping, car camping allows people to bring their own gear and supplies, making it a perfect choice for families with young children.

Despite the challenges that come with reaching remote locations, campers keep coming, bringing all they need to "live" outdoors for a day or a weekend – cookware, mini stove, griller, bed, chairs, tables, coolers, even portable toilets and shower rooms. The beauty of car camping is that it allows people to stay in their car while enjoying the outdoors, making it a safe alternative activity for Filipino families during the pandemic.

The Facebook page Car Camping PH has become a go-to for information on campsite location, services, and customer relations, as well as for camping gear – from the high-end roof racks to grills and cookware. Many believe that the administrators' and moderator's tight rein on group behavior is the reason why it has grown so fast in less than three years.

“We treat each other as family. That’s why the founder of the group has always made it clear that all members of the family should be protected from unscrupulous members,” said Lawrence Dy, the moderator, of their rules on many issues, among them bashing and selling or swapping gear.

Car camping has rekindled the Filipino's love for the outdoors, offering a sense of freedom and flexibility during these difficult times. It has become a way for people to escape the busy city life and appreciate the beauty of nature – without sacrificing everyone's health.

In a world where we are more connected than ever, car camping offers a chance to disconnect, unwind, and recharge in the heart of nature. It is a growing trend that is attracting thousands of travelers, offering a strange list of non-amenities – no electricity, shared toilets, no Wi-Fi. Instead, it offers nature, within a forest, beside a river, or a beach.

Car camping may not be for everyone, but for those who are curious to try, it can be a life-changing experience. It allows us to step out of our comfort zone and explore the world in a new and exciting way. With the growing popularity of car camping in the Philippines, there has never been a better time to give it a try.
